Today the festival in Nablus started with an event that focused on the Oud, a musical instrument famous in ancient and modern times. With Ali Hassasin present, the only Oud manufacturer in Nablus, the audience was treated to a brief history of the Oud as well as a simplified introduction to how Ouds are created. We learned how different kinds of wood are used for the Oud, such as mahogany, cider and walnut, and how the wood is absolutely essential for a beautiful tune.
The manufacturer went through the various steps of the Oud-making process and mentioned how it takes 60 to 90 days in total to create an Oud! All of this was interwoven with some beautiful harmonious tunes by Ali and the Danish band, creating a very special experience for anyone present.
